Vertical Expression

Focus on vertical blending in background and foreground, and line in composition

Focusing your attention on creating a well-blended background is important. It is the make or break in a successful painting because this area is what directs the viewer to look at the focal point. A well-executed background can be accomplished in many ways.  One way is to imagine the soft focus of a photograph of the woods.  The background is a blend of soft fuzzy supportive graduation of color. The focal point are the vertical trees.  Even though the trees are bold and upright, the surroundings take the viewer on a journey in and out of the trees.

Soft focus can be used with one image in the foreground such as a portrait or a single flower as well.
