Article #26 A Road Less Traveled

About five times a month, I am asked the question, “Is it too late for me to be an artist?”

My answer has always taken a bit more probing.  It is never too late for someone that wants to begin painting, for personal pleasure. Making art is good for the soul in that it ignites life from within. Studies have shown that the technical characteristics of art help sharpen cognitive skills. Therefore, it must be good for all ages.  A similar thread in new artists is to start noticing things in daily life that otherwise might have been missed. The edges of leaves grow sharper, and colors become more brilliant. Being a career artist, I can honestly say that it has been a glorious experience of hope. For me, it is natural at 4:00 am, to bound out of bed feeling the fresh crisp morning dew; anticipating the magical wonders that can be created.  Painting on canvas has also been an aid in successfully diverting attention from constant physical pain, that otherwise would be uncomfortable. Making art is a way of making beautiful things as nonverbal expressions. I recommend it to everyone without exception.

Diverting Attention

Happy Flowers

For those who doubt, there is another way to approach the answer to this question. Notice the past.  People have applied creative skills to different life achievements.  The professor may conduct research and propose new possibilities in their field of study.  A chemist engages in experiments. An administrator organizes to develop time-saving processes. Housekeepers look for new inroads in applying natural cleaning mixtures for greater efficiency. A cook may enjoy putting a new spin on an old recipe.  These skills all apply to being an artist. Think of it as “diverting’ already established skills and focus, rather than starting from scratch. One might have to dust off some cobwebs or oil the mental gears so the thinking wheel can turn freely in any direction.  Once done, you are well on your way to achieving beautiful artistic endeavors.

Learning Resources

The next step is to find an educational resource. Everyone learns from different vantage points. This is true in many things but especially art. The modern world has produced many ways to be exposed to art. Each person must take the reins as a master to find out which avenue of learning best serves them.  The right teacher encourages growth by creating a warm cozy environment. A new artist can soar in learning how to apply hard concepts. The more confident a teacher is within their ability, the gentler and kinder they tend to be.

The included painting is called, “Happy Flowers”. The original  36” x 48” painting is sold but the concept of free-formed abstract blooming flowers, with joyful loose lines is timeless.

Which Direction is Best?

Art principles are universal, but an individual will naturally have definite likes and dislikes. The following tips may be advantageous.  Styles that one gravitates to hold breadcrumbs to success as an artist. Those who enjoy hard crisp lines and geometric shapes may enjoy graphic art. If smooth curvy lines, and repeating patterns with amorphous shapes are appealing, abstract art might be a jumping-off point. The road may start in one direction and later twist and turn. The important thing is to love the journey of a road less traveled.
