Appealing Abstract Painting-The Villages Enrichment Academy
Shapes, Value, and Process explore achromatic painting using only black and white to focus on shape, value, and composition without the distraction of color. While abstract art can appear spontaneous, this class reveals how strong abstraction is built through intentional systems and design principles rooted in art history. Beginning with the first drawn line, students will engage in process-based experimentation and intuitive mark-making to develop dynamic, visually compelling abstract paintings. No previous experience is needed.
All levels are welcome. Students are required to bring the required listed basic table set up. The paint colors are suggestions only. Feel free to bring different colors. The required paint colors are black and white only. This class is open to all levels, and we’re here to help you create a moving seascape. Registration is not until after Meet the teacher day on Sept 18ish.

Prepare your artistic away from home space with the essentials:
- Table Setup: We use the same simple supplies that follow, in most classes.
- Canvas: Bring one canvas. Square works best but or rectangle will work 16 x 20 , 20 x 20 etc. – Don’t go too big, unless you consider yourself advanced.
- Paper Towels: Essential for dabbing and blending, ensuring your colors harmonize effortlessly. Absolute must.
- Plastic table cloth: dollar store
- Container for water: Larger than a cup
- Palette Paper and Palette Knife: Provide the perfect surface for mixing your palette of aquatic shades.
- Easel: Elevate your painting experience with the support of a sturdy easel.
- Zoie silicone scraping tool: – it is a flat scraper (no grip) can be any brand. If you can’t find this no stress. I will bring mine for you to borrow.
- Paint colors–
- white – artist loft brand or Amsterdam titanium white
- black – Amsterdam brand
- you can bring one extra paint color of your choice.
- Brushes –1- a soft 1″ wash brush, and one firmer flat chiseled edge acrylic brush (long brown handle Princeton) NO angled brush or filberts.
- Charcoal Stick – for sketching is important.
