Should I join a Co-op of Artists? Article 3

group photoCo-ops of artists are all run differently. Often they are connected to a gallery space but they do not have to have to be. They could be formed as a group of artists to only travel and do shows together.

Use your past experience with groups to answer this question. People all have personalities and just like all groups, the members will naturally form friendships, a pecking order, social values, etc.  Once the art cooperative has been established, a set of values will be created to live by. All newbies coming into the group will indoctrinated with “a way of thinking”. This is the basis on how religions are formed. There should always be revolving and improving rules in place where new people, fresh ideas and modern systems will be welcome so the group can evolve in a healthy and progressive way.

One person in a co-op will ultimately be a leader with or without necessarily, a specific title that denotes the role. Think in terms of a family. A co-op can never be equal for all the members.  Don’t fool yourself. Someone is always in charge, therefore, figure out who in the group is the “it” person. Make sure that person’s beliefs match yours.  Over time, observe that the group can stay on point with the group’s values and does not fragment. Only join if you have, “wide open eyes”. If the group makes and keeps agreements it can be a fun wonderful experience for everyone.  If you don’t put the time into paying attention, it will ultimately cost you money, time and stress. Maybe a co-op is where you as an artist will learn new things and flourish, so joining a co-op could be an obvious, temporary, next step. Be ready for change. When you see the flow of the group changing in a direction that is away from what is true to you, move on.  It doesn’t make the group good or bad, just not for you anymore. Don’t over stay your welcome and everyone will be happy. Being in the right place at the right time is how you will be the next world renown ultra- successful artist extraordinaire’. The art world is about being able to see an opportunity and move on a dime, quickly, effectively and with the grace of a prince or princess.
