Can Art Heal?
Can Art Heal?
This painting helps me remember the feeling of gratitude, during a show, when I overheard a gentleman whispered to his wife, “That painting almost makes me feel seasick.”
If a painting evokes feeling or tells a story, it is a successful work of art. “In The Swim” is part of my “Fluid Dreams” series of water paintings. Jump off the boat into the embracing waters of the ocean to take that last dive of the day. Or, simply lay back and gaze over the gentle inviting waves of the Caribbean whilst you easily float in the buoyant salt water. My love for water is limitless so painting water is just as pleasing as being in the water swimming.
Professionals say, the act of painting can go one step further into healing possibility. Years after beginning my, “A Fresh Approach to Painting” program, I concur. Currently, art therapy is used in progressive institutions such as The Walter Reed National Military Medical Center and Shands AIM program (Arts in Medicine). From young to old, Art is the universal language that helps people cope. No matter what life dishes out, painting can be a place of peace that is constant. It is the dependable, solid friend, welcoming and supportive to stand by you through personal journeys.
Too me, art is multifaceted.
